H-60 Seahawk – PDF

The Sikorsky H-60 Seahawk was developed during the 1970s to provide the U.S. Navy with a modern shipboard helicopter capable of replacing the aging SH-2 Seasprite in a variety of maritime missions. Derived from Sikorsky’s UH-60 Black Hawk, the navalized design incorporated modifications for operations aboard warships, including folding rotor blades, corrosion protection, strengthened landing gear, and specialized naval avionics. Entering service in the 1980s, the Seahawk provided the fleet with a versatile helicopter capable of operating from cruisers, destroyers, frigates, and other naval vessels.

Anti-submarine warfare became one of the Seahawk’s most important missions. Equipped in various versions with sonobuoys, magnetic anomaly detection equipment, dipping sonar, radar, and torpedoes, Seahawks could search for, track, and attack submarines far beyond the immediate reach of their parent ships. The helicopter also developed into an effective anti-surface warfare platform, using sensors and guided weapons to locate and engage hostile vessels while extending the surveillance range of the fleet.

The Seahawk has participated in U.S. naval operations from the final years of the Cold War through conflicts and deployments in the Persian Gulf, Middle East, and elsewhere around the world. Later versions greatly expanded its capabilities, performing search and rescue, special operations support, medical evacuation, vertical replenishment, personnel transport, maritime security, and combat missions. The MH-60R and MH-60S have become particularly important components of modern U.S. carrier and surface combatant operations.

Decades after its introduction, the H-60 Seahawk family remains a cornerstone of U.S. naval aviation and has also been adopted by numerous allied navies. Its ability to perform a wide variety of missions from relatively small warships has made it one of the most successful naval helicopters of the modern era.
