The Antonov An-22 Antei was developed during the 1960s to provide the Soviet Union with a heavy transport aircraft capable of moving large military equipment, troops, and supplies across vast distances. Designed by the Antonov Design Bureau, the aircraft featured a massive cargo hold, high-mounted wings, and four powerful turboprop engines driving contra-rotating propellers. At the time of its introduction, the An-22 was the largest aircraft in the world and represented a major advancement in Soviet airlift capability.
Throughout the Cold War, the An-22 served as a strategic transport aircraft supporting military deployments, logistical operations, humanitarian missions, and equipment transfers across the Soviet Union and allied nations. Its large cargo capacity allowed it to transport vehicles, helicopters, engineering equipment, and oversized loads that smaller aircraft could not accommodate. The aircraft also participated in numerous international relief efforts, demonstrating its value beyond purely military applications.
Although later supplemented by aircraft such as the Il-76 and An-124, the An-22 remained an important part of Soviet and Russian air transport operations for decades. Its combination of size, range, and payload capacity established new standards for military airlift and helped pave the way for future heavy transport aircraft. The An-22 remains one of the most impressive and recognizable cargo aircraft produced during the Cold War era.
