F-86 Sabre – PDF

The North American F-86 Sabre was developed in the years immediately following World War II as the United States sought a new generation of high-performance jet fighters. Designed by North American Aviation, the F-86 incorporated swept wings based on emerging aerodynamic research, giving it substantially better performance at high speeds than earlier straight-wing jets. The Sabre’s combination of responsive handling, good visibility, and advanced systems made it one of the most capable Western fighters of the early Cold War.

The F-86 earned its reputation during the Korean War, where it was deployed to counter the Soviet-designed MiG-15. Sabres fought frequent air battles over northwestern Korea in the area that became known as “MiG Alley,” with American pilots competing for control of the skies against North Korean, Chinese, and Soviet-operated aircraft. Although closely matched with the MiG-15, the F-86’s handling characteristics, gunsight technology, and experienced pilots helped it achieve considerable success in air-to-air combat. Later versions also performed fighter-bomber and ground-attack missions.

Following Korea, the Sabre became one of the most widely used Western jet fighters of the 1950s and 1960s. Numerous variants served with the United States and allied air forces around the world, while licensed production in Canada, Australia, and elsewhere extended the aircraft’s operational career. Sabres subsequently participated in additional regional conflicts, including combat between India and Pakistan.
