The Douglas C-47 Skytrain was developed from the highly successful Douglas DC-3 commercial airliner to meet the growing transport needs of the United States military. Designed by the Douglas Aircraft Company, the C-47 featured a strengthened airframe, reinforced cargo floor, large cargo door, and other modifications that made it ideal for transporting troops, cargo, paratroopers, and wounded personnel. Its rugged construction and dependable performance quickly established it as one of the most important transport aircraft in military history.

Although best known for its service during World War II, the C-47 continued to play a vital role throughout the early Cold War. During the Korean War, Skytrains transported troops, supplies, and casualties while supporting airborne operations and logistical missions across the Korean Peninsula. The aircraft also served extensively during the early years of the Vietnam War, where it performed transport, resupply, and specialized missions. Modified variants, including the famous AC-47 “Spooky” gunship, provided close air support and defended remote outposts against enemy attacks.

The C-47 remained in military service with the United States and dozens of allied nations for decades after its introduction.
