F-101 Voodoo – PDF

The McDonnell F-101 Voodoo was developed during the 1950s from an earlier concept for a long-range fighter capable of escorting Strategic Air Command bombers deep into enemy territory. Designed by McDonnell Aircraft, the F-101 combined twin powerful afterburning turbojet engines with swept wings and a streamlined fuselage, giving it exceptional speed and range for its era. Changing Air Force requirements redirected the aircraft into several specialized roles, resulting in one of the more versatile members of America’s “Century Series” fighters.

The Voodoo served in several important Cold War missions. F-101A and F-101C aircraft operated as tactical fighter-bombers capable of delivering nuclear weapons, while the two-seat F-101B became a major all-weather interceptor for the defense of North American airspace. Voodoos operated with both the U.S. Air Force and Royal Canadian Air Force, standing alert against the threat of Soviet bombers approaching across the Arctic during some of the most tense years of the Cold War.

Reconnaissance versions of the Voodoo achieved particularly significant operational service. The RF-101 conducted high-speed photographic reconnaissance missions during international crises and saw extensive combat during the Vietnam War, gathering intelligence over heavily defended territory. Its combination of speed, range, and photographic equipment made the reconnaissance Voodoo an important source of battlefield intelligence before more specialized reconnaissance platforms became available.

Although eventually replaced by newer interceptors, reconnaissance aircraft, and tactical fighters, the F-101 Voodoo served as an important component of Western air power for decades. Its combination of speed, versatility, and service in nuclear strike, continental air defense, and reconnaissance roles made the Voodoo one of the distinctive combat aircraft of the Cold War.
