The Grumman EA-6B Prowler was developed during the 1960s as a dedicated electronic warfare aircraft capable of supporting carrier air wings and joint military operations. Based on the successful A-6 Intruder airframe, the Prowler was extensively modified with advanced electronic countermeasure systems, a four-person crew, and sophisticated equipment designed to detect, jam, and suppress enemy radar and communications. Its mission was to reduce the effectiveness of enemy air defenses and improve the survivability of friendly aircraft operating in contested airspace.
The EA-6B entered combat during the Vietnam War, where it provided critical electronic support for strike packages attacking heavily defended targets. By jamming enemy radar systems and launching AGM-88 HARM anti-radiation missiles against surface-to-air missile sites, the Prowler helped protect both naval and Air Force aircraft from increasingly sophisticated air defense networks. Its unique capabilities quickly made it an indispensable asset during high-threat combat operations.
Following Vietnam, the Prowler continued to serve throughout the Cold War and participated in numerous conflicts, including Operation El Dorado Canyon against Libya, Operation Desert Storm, operations over the Balkans, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Operated by both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps, the EA-6B remained the United States’ primary tactical electronic attack aircraft for decades before being replaced by the EA-18G Growler. Its exceptional record of protecting friendly forces and suppressing enemy air defenses secured the Prowler’s reputation as one of the most capable electronic warfare aircraft ever built.
