FJ-2 Fury – PDF

The North American FJ-2 Fury was developed during the early 1950s as the U.S. Navy sought a swept-wing fighter capable of matching the performance demonstrated by land-based jets such as the F-86 Sabre and Soviet MiG-15. Designed by North American Aviation, the FJ-2 adapted the basic Sabre concept for naval service with folding wings, strengthened landing gear, an arresting hook, and other modifications required for carrier operations. The result combined the proven aerodynamic qualities of the F-86 with features intended for the demanding environment of naval aviation.

Entering service shortly after the Korean War, the FJ-2 did not see combat. Although designed for carrier operations, the aircraft proved less suitable for routine carrier use than anticipated, and most production FJ-2s were assigned to the U.S. Marine Corps. Marine squadrons operated the Fury primarily from land bases, where its swept-wing performance provided a significant improvement over earlier straight-wing jet fighters.

The FJ-2’s operational career was relatively brief as naval aviation technology advanced rapidly during the 1950s. However, experience gained with the aircraft contributed directly to the improved FJ-3 and later FJ-4 Fury, which became more successful naval fighters. Together, these aircraft helped establish swept-wing jet operations within the Navy and Marine Corps during a critical period in the development of carrier aviation.

Although overshadowed by both the F-86 Sabre from which it was derived and the more capable Fury variants that followed, the FJ-2 occupies an important place in early Cold War naval aviation. It represented one of the first serious efforts to bring the performance of the new generation of swept-wing fighters to American naval forces.
