The McDonnell F2H Banshee was developed during the late 1940s to provide the U.S. Navy with a capable jet-powered fighter for carrier operations. Designed by the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation, the Banshee built upon the company’s earlier FH Phantom while incorporating more powerful engines, increased range, and improved combat performance. Its straight-wing design and four 20 mm cannons made it a formidable fighter during the early years of the jet age.
The Banshee entered combat during the Korean War, where it served primarily with U.S. Navy carrier air wings. Flying fighter escort, fleet air defense, ground attack, and photographic reconnaissance missions, the aircraft proved to be dependable and effective throughout the conflict. Although it rarely encountered enemy jet fighters, the F2H’s speed, endurance, and firepower made it well suited for operations over the Korean Peninsula.
Following the Korean War, the Banshee continued to serve as an important component of U.S. naval aviation until more advanced swept-wing fighters entered service. Reconnaissance variants remained in operation for several years, providing valuable intelligence during the early Cold War. As one of the U.S. Navy’s first successful carrier-based jet fighters, the F2H Banshee helped bridge the transition from piston-powered aircraft to the modern jet age.
